No Typical Day for Unschoolers

There is no typical day in the life of the unschooler and that’s what makes this special. This morning the focus was on imagination and creativity. The scholars brought in a pet snake to the building today and the morning was filled with conversations about what snakes need in their habitat. Pinecones, trees and flowers are all things that snakes have in their natural habitat. The snake took a very long nap and teachers explained snakes need naps just like people do.

The second scholar was very interested in puzzles and origami art, as well as reading. Teachers and scholars had snacks at about 10:30 and it was tasty. The younger scholar learned to put the bowl in the middle so everyone could share and only take one at a time.

After snack we went to another part of the building and played drums for about a half hour, it was very fun. Both scholars got a chance to play the drums and one scholar was interested in the piano. It was very enjoyable for the teachers to celebrate their concert.

Lunch was at the building today and there was more reading. After three books were read, we went to the park. Today we had some practice with taking turns while waiting for the slide. The scholars did a little science project by creating a home for a bee that was very tired from a long day flying. They gave him berries and created a nest out of leaves. One of the scholars gave the bee a flower and was particularly gentle with her approach. One of the teachers shared about how people also need to be gentle with people especially when they are tired. After a very full day of crafts, imagination, reading, and science the scholars went home.
